Grieves the Loss of Respected Public Figure, Historian, and Cultural Champion

ILOILO CITY – The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) – Iloilo Chapter has passed a solemn resolution, RESOLUTION NO. 2024 – 01, expressing its deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the late Demetrio “Demy” Sonza. The resolution recognizes his invaluable contributions to the province and mourns the loss of a distinguished public servant, historian, and advocate for cultural preservation.

Demy Sonza, a luminary figure in Iloilo’s political and cultural landscape, passed away on January 22, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of selfless public service. Born on March 3, 1934, Sonza would have celebrated his 90th birthday this March. His final Facebook post on January 5, 2024, titled “58 Days to My 90th Birthday, The Teeny-Weeny Rose,” reflected his artistic expression and profound appreciation for the beauty of life.

The resolution notes that Demy Sonza served as vice governor from 1995 to 2001 and later returned to the Provincial Board, serving three consecutive terms until 2019. His dedication to the betterment of Iloilo was a testament to a lifelong commitment to public service.

In addition to his political career, Demy Sonza was a prominent Ilonggo historian, orator, author, columnist, journalist, and philanthropist. Notable works such as “Visayan Fighters for Freedom” and “Mightier than the Sword: Biography of Graciano Lopez Jaena” have left an indelible mark on Ilonggo history.

Married to Gloria Jayaon and a loving father to their daughter, Demy Sonza’s personal and professional life exemplified dedication, passion, and a commitment to preserving Iloilo’s rich cultural heritage.

The resolution adopted by the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Iloilo Chapter extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Demetrio “Demy” Sonza, acknowledging his legacy that transcends governance. The late public servant’s tireless dedication to educating and inspiring future generations about their cultural heritage makes him a beacon of inspiration for many.

The resolution was adopted on the 29th day of January, 2024, and was prepared and certified correct by Hon. Liecel Mondejar-Seville, Secretary of LMP – Province of Iloilo and Municipal Mayor of New Lucena, Iloilo. The resolution was approved by Hon. Rosario Mediatrix P. Fernandez, President of LMP – Province of Iloilo and Municipal Mayor of San Enrique, Iloilo.
